Program Overview
The Writing and Foster Youth Alliance (WAFYA) at UCR is here for you! Specifically designed for current and former foster youth, WAFYA is a unique program that goes beyond traditional academic support. Think of it as a dedicated network of faculty mentors who understand your unique journey and are committed to your success.
WAFYA is more than just tutoring. It's about building genuine, collaborative academic relationships with faculty members from the University Writing Program. These professors are passionate about empowering you to thrive at UCR. They’ll provide personalized mentorship, helping you navigate the challenges of college life and develop the strong writing and critical thinking skills essential for academic success. Whether you need help with essays, research papers, or just want to discuss your academic goals, WAFYA mentors are there to listen, guide, and support you every step of the way. They'll also provide supplemental academic support, which could include workshops, one-on-one sessions, and resources tailored to your individual needs.

Target Audience and Requirements
Current and former foster youth enrolled at UCR. Must identify as a current or former foster youth and be a UCR student.
We offer mentorship and supplemental academic support, including through writing labs, study halls, therapeutic writing activities, and formal lectures and workshops on composition. The core of the program, however, is one-on-one tutoring, which can lead to sustained mentoring relationships between faculty members and students in the foster youth community.
