Program Overview
Community Engaged Learning is a partnership between UCR academic courses and the community to support local needs. The program goals are to:
1) establish and sustain mutually beneficial, respectful, and sustained collaboration that creates a sense of collective ownership and reciprocal value for the campus (including students, faculty, and staff) and community partners, 2) enriche the scholarship of the institution by accessing community cultural wealth and expertise, 3) address community-identified needs and enhance community well-being, and 4) deepen students' civic and academic learning, and promote connection between these through opportunities for critical reflection and professional development.Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at UCR offers students a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world impact. By partnering with local community organizations, CEL allows you to apply classroom learning to address pressing community needs. This isn't just volunteering; it's a structured program that fosters mutually beneficial relationships, ensuring both UCR and its community partners gain valuable insights and resources. You'll move beyond textbooks and lectures, actively contributing to projects that enhance community well-being and develop your own professional skills.
Through CEL, you'll gain hands-on experience in areas like social justice, environmental sustainability, and education, depending on the community partner you work with. This direct involvement allows you to see the practical application of your studies, fostering a deeper understanding of course concepts and their relevance to society. Beyond academic enrichment, CEL cultivates civic responsibility and a sense of belonging. You'll learn to collaborate effectively, communicate across diverse audiences, and critically reflect on your experiences, building crucial skills for your future career and personal growth.
Ultimately, Community Engaged Learning is about creating reciprocal value. You'll contribute your time and talents while gaining invaluable experience, mentorship, and a broader perspective on the world around you. This program empowers you to become an active and engaged citizen, shaping your college experience and making a lasting difference in the Riverside community. It's a chance to build your resume, expand your network, and truly live out UCR's commitment to service and community partnership.
