Program Overview

The Kessler Scholars Program at the University of California, Riverside, is designed to provide holistic support to students from lower-income households who are the first in their families to pursue a four-year college degree. By combining financial resources with cohort-based engagement and individualized guidance, the program equips first-generation students with the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to thrive during their undergraduate journey at UCR. Through workshops and activities, the Kessler Scholars Program promotes academic, personal, and professional development while empowering participants to cultivate their unique voices and leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment. The program is committed to ensuring that the Kessler Scholars' experience is both transformational and meaningful, strengthening and advancing the success of first-generation students.

Target Audience and Requirements

All prospective First-Year, First-Generation College Students.

To be considered for the Kessler Scholars Program, students must:

• Identify as a first-generation college student (neither parent/guardian has earned a four-year bachelor’s degree)
• Demonstrate financial need
• Exhibit a commitment to giving back to their community and promising capability to contribute to and benefit from the diverse Kessler Scholars community

All Kessler Scholars participants are expected to fulfill all Quarterly Program Requirements, including meeting individually with the Kessler Scholars Program Coordinator, attending workshops, events, and social activities, participating in a mentoring program, and engaging in community service, leadership opportunities, and high-impact practices. As an active participant you will receive a $500 quarterly scholarship that goes to your tuition. It is your responsibility to proactively communicate with the program coordinator if unable to fulfill these requirements. If you become inactive in the program you risk losing your financial scholarship connected with the program.

While a part of Kessler Scholars it is a requirement to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above per quarter. You must maintain a full course load of at least 12 units per term.

It is expected that after your first year in the program you support new incoming Kessler Scholars as a peer mentor. As a group we will engage in a community service program. Lastly in your third or fourth year at UCR you will participate in a High Impact Program, in which we will provide you with a mini grant to offset the cost.
