We know that being a first-generation college student can come with its own unique set of challenges, and sometimes you might feel like you're navigating uncharted waters. That's exactly why this incredible program exists – to provide you with holistic support every step of the way, helping you not just survive, but truly thrive during your undergraduate journey at UCR.
So, what does "holistic support" actually mean? It's a powerful combination designed to set you up for absolute success! The Kessler Scholars Program tackles support on multiple fronts. First off, it provides crucial financial resources to help ease the burden of college costs, letting you focus more on your studies and less on financial worries. But it's so much more than just money. You'll become part of a vibrant cohort, a tight-knit community of fellow first-generation students who understand your journey. This means built-in friendships, shared experiences, and a powerful network of support from day one. On top of that, you'll receive individualized guidance from mentors and staff who are genuinely invested in your personal and academic growth. They'll help you navigate everything from choosing classes to finding campus resources and exploring career paths.

Target Audience and Requirements
All prospective First-Year, First-Generation College Students.
To be considered for the Kessler Scholars Program, students must:
• Identify as a first-generation college student (neither parent/guardian has earned a four-year bachelor’s degree)
• Demonstrate financial need
• Exhibit a commitment to giving back to their community and promising capability to contribute to and benefit from the diverse Kessler Scholars community
All Kessler Scholars participants are expected to fulfill all Quarterly Program Requirements, including meeting individually with the Kessler Scholars Program Coordinator, attending workshops, events, and social activities, participating in a mentoring program, and engaging in community service, leadership opportunities, and high-impact practices. As an active participant you will receive a $500 quarterly scholarship that goes to your tuition. It is your responsibility to proactively communicate with the program coordinator if unable to fulfill these requirements. If you become inactive in the program you risk losing your financial scholarship connected with the program.
While a part of Kessler Scholars it is a requirement to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above per quarter. You must maintain a full course load of at least 12 units per term.
It is expected that after your first year in the program you support new incoming Kessler Scholars as a peer mentor. As a group we will engage in a community service program. Lastly in your third or fourth year at UCR you will participate in a High Impact Program, in which we will provide you with a mini grant to offset the cost.
