On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, the Division of Undergraduate Education launched its first chapter of the Undergraduate Education Speaker Series on Student Success in the XCITE Center for Teaching and Learning. The first topic of the UE Speaker Series was titled, "Black Student Success... A Collective Effort" led by Black Student Success Coordinator Victor Moreira, a long-time UCR staff member and UCR alumni.
The event began with introductory remarks by UCR’s Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, Dr. Louie Rodriguez. He spoke on the importance of fostering a culture of dialogue and collaboration amongst campus colleagues. The UE Speaker Series will be an excellent opportunity for advancing student success at UC Riverside. VPDUE Rodriguez provided context to the presentation by sharing that Riverside and San Bernardino counties combined served among the highest percentage of K-12 Black students in the state.
Moreira highlighted the work on campus to support Black students like holding Community Hours where students can drop in to discuss challenges they may be facing and helping them make informed decisions. In addition, he recruits students to join the Blue, Gold, and Black Mentorship Program.
The event ended with a breakout session, sharing strategies and ideas on how campus partners can collaborate with the Black Student Success Coordinator to serve Black students at UCR. The Division of Undergraduate Education is thrilled to continue the UE Speaker Series to spotlight important work on campus and ultimately boost student success.
