The Top: New Spaces on Campus to Serve Students

Riverside, Ca –

Welcome to The Top!

In this edition of The Top, we present the three different spaces that UC Riverside has created with one solid intention: support student success.

The Veterans Resource Center, the Teaching and Learning Center, and the R’Pantry all have new spaces and held open house events last week. Here is a roundup and a photo slideshow of each of the events.

1. UCR Veterans Resource Center

On Nov. 15, UCR celebrated the grand opening of its official Veterans Resource Center. This new center is located at Bannockburn Village H-108 and offers veterans, reserves, active duty, ROTC, and family members a computer lab, lounge, and clear access to a center coordinator and a financial aid advisor, among other services. UCR’s Veterans Resource Center was dedicated to U.S. Army Spc. Jesus Duran, a Medal of Honor recipient who returned home after the Vietnam War to work as a corrections officer in San Bernardino. Duran died in 1977.

His daughter, Tina Duran Ruvalcaba, attended the event that honored her late father. Duran Ruvalcaba said she was “overwhelmed with emotion” knowing that her father’s name would be permanently associated with UCR’s Veterans Resource Center.

Riverside Mayor William “Rusty” Bailey, a U.S. Army veteran, was also present.

2. Teaching and Learning Center

Undergraduate Education’s new UCR Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) is housed at the Tomás Rivera Library, A0101A. An open house on Nov. 16 welcomed the campus community.

This new space is intended to provide resources and collaborative opportunities for instructors to discuss, explore, adapt, innovate and assess curricula, pedagogies, and tools to improve teaching and learning at UCR.

The TLC hosts speakers and panel discussions on educational issues and trends, and also organizes an annual campuswide Celebration of Teaching each spring to recognize excellence in instruction in the areas represented in the center.

3. R’Pantry Has a Bigger Home

On Nov. 17, the new R’Pantry, now located at Costo Hall 110, held an open house to showcase its new space. This food pantry, which supports undergraduate and graduate students, is operated by The Well and supported by a cross-campus collaborative effort that includes UCR’s Swipe Out Hunger, Dining Services, and the R’Garden. The goal is to alleviate UCR students’ food insecurity; UC surveys found that 62 percent of UCR undergraduate students reported being food insecure, compared to 42 percent systemwide. Food insecurity is defined as having limited access to, or an uncertain availability of, nutritious food.

The pantry serves about 400 students on a weekly basis. It offers students items such as fresh produce and childcare essentials (baby food or formula).

UCR's main food pantry, R'Pantry, moved into a new space. Students stopped by to pick up the free grocery items and visitors toured the new space on Friday, November 17, 2017. SANDRA BALTAZAR MARTINEZ
