On March 8, 2016 (International Women's Day), the Global Issues Forum brought students and faculty together to discuss global perspectives on gender equity and justice. Panelists included UCR faculty with personal and professional experience in many corners of the world. Tanya Rawal , Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi , Muhamad Ali , Erla Marteinsdottir, Ruhi Khan , and Perry Link each shared brief introductions with the whole group. Each faculty member also sat with a group of students, who presented topics and questions for further discussion. Topics of discussion included women in government in Indonesia, the impact of linguistic differences in Nigeria, and intersectionality with race and class in India. One student commented: "I learned that gender inequity varies in different contexts like social class, national setting, and professional setting. I really enjoyed hearing the different perspectives from different faculty and I left the forum with some questions to think about." The Global Issues Forum is also ramping up for a focus on the War on Drugs. On April 21st at 4pm in the Alumni Center, the forum will host a discussion with Angela Hawken (co-author of Drugs and Drug Policy: What Everyone Needs to Know) and Everard Meade (Director of the Trans-Border Institute), moderated by UCR's David Pion-Berlin. Check out the GIF blog blog, currently featuring profiles of people around the world fighting for gender equity.
