UE Works on Assessment of Learning Outcomes in General Education

Riverside, Ca –
Over the last six months, UE has been working on assessment of learning outcomes in general education. The general education assessment has three parts. Under the direction of Allison Cantwell, UE has conducted an assessment of entry-level writing, comparing student essays at the beginning of English composition courses with those produced at the end of the courses. Cantwell and colleagues in the University Writing Program have developed rubrics for scoring essays. All scoring is blind and has involved two readers per essay. Results of this assessment will be available next month. Also under Cantwell's direction, UE has undertaken an evaluation of large general education courses. A joint UE-Academic Senate Committee proposed focusing on student opportunities to develop quantitative literacy and oral communication skills in general education courses. These were two areas identified as most in need of review. Cantwell and her staff have analyzed course syllabi and conducted an online survey of faculty members who have taught large general education courses over the last three years. Results of this assessment will also be available next month.
