University Honors

After a year of re-envisioning, University Honors will become a 4 year program for high-achieving students.  With increased faculty input, plans call for a dedicated critical thinking course, small group-faculty led ignition seminars, transition to college and success workshops, a new course dedicated to epistemology and the placement of research in the generation of new knowledge, a course to facilitate the preparation of a thesis prospectus, and a capstone project leading to an Honors Thesis.  Throughout their time in University Honors, students will be exposed to developmental advising and community service learning, be prepped for scholarships and prestigious awards, and be provided opportunities for peer mentorship and campus leadership positions.

  • Rhodes Marshall Committee

The Rhodes Marshall Committee works to prepare UCR students to compete successfully for prestigious scholarships and fellowships. The committee is named after the two most competitive scholarship programs for undergraduate students. Committee members help prepare students who are interested not only in the Rhodes or Marshall Scholarships, but in other awards as well. These include the Fulbright Fellowship, the Goldwater Scholarship, the Strauss Scholarship, and the Truman Scholarship. Members of the Committee work with students to improve their application materials, their essays, their answers to interview questions, and their personal presentations. Students are encouraged to volunteer to work with the Committee beginning in their sophomore year. Members of the Committee include: Guillermo Aguilar (Engineering), Eric Barr (Theater), John Briggs (English), Steven Brint (UE and Sociology), John Cioffi (Political Science), Timothy Lyons (Earth Sciences), Robin Russin (Theater), Sharon Walker (Engineering), and Georgia Warnke (Political Science). Gladis Herrera-Berkowitz (University Honors) provides staff support for the committee. Students interested in mentoring by the committee should contact Vice Provost Steven Brint (brint@ucr.edu) or Ms. Herrera-Berkowitz (gladis@ucr.edu). Interested students may also contact individual members of the Committee.
